Golokwati residents decry high electricity bills and power outages

Residents of Golokwati in the Afadzato South District of the Volta Region have appealed to the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Mr Frank Afriyie, to intervene in what they describe as excessively high electricity bills and frequent power outages.
The residents told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that their monthly electricity bills from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) had increased significantly in recent months, despite no corresponding increase in their power consumption.
They said the situation, coupled with the inconsistent power supply, was putting financial pressure on households and adversely affecting small businesses in the community.
A resident, Mawuli Gazo, said residents were becoming frustrated with the situation and needed urgent intervention.
“We are tired of paying high bills. We want our MP to help us. We cannot continue to bear this problem every day,” he said.
Another resident, Fo Kwaku, expressed dissatisfaction with the frequent outages and called on the government to take steps to ensure a stable electricity supply.
“We pay our bills, yet the lights go off frequently. We want the MP to engage ECG to explain why the bills are so high and help address the situation,” he said.
A trader, Da Yawa, said the frequent power outages were negatively affecting her business, particularly the sale and preservation of perishable goods.
“My sales have dropped because of the power outages. My goods get spoilt when there is no light to keep them fresh,” she lamented.
The residents are therefore calling on the MP and the Afadzato South District Assembly to engage the management of ECG to investigate the billing concerns, address the frequent outages and educate consumers on efficient electricity usage.
As of the time of filing the report, the ECG office in the district had not responded to the concerns raised by the residents.
