Ketu South: Denu Chicago Basic School Receives Four-Unit Toilet Facility

Pupils and teachers of the Denu Chicago Basic School in the Ketu South Municipality can now access improved and safer sanitation facilities following the completion of a four-unit modern toilet block for the school.

The facility, constructed through a joint initiative by the Ras Muta Foundation and the Denu Nugoryiyi Foundation, was handed over to the school on Wednesday.

For several years, the school had struggled without an appropriate toilet facility, forcing pupils and teachers to leave the school compound whenever they needed to use a toilet.

Mr Prosper Mensah, Headteacher of the school, said the situation had created serious sanitation, safety and logistical challenges.

He said the school’s location along a major road made it particularly risky for pupils to leave the compound in search of toilet facilities.

According to him, some pupils had narrowly escaped being knocked down by motorcycles and vehicles while crossing the road or moving outside the school to access toilets.

Teachers were also affected, he said, as some had to leave the school during working hours to use facilities outside the premises.

Mr Mensah said the new toilet block would therefore provide more than improved sanitation, as it would also help protect pupils and teachers from the risks associated with leaving the school compound.

He expressed appreciation to the Ras Muta Foundation and the Denu Nugoryiyi Foundation for addressing the school’s long-standing challenge and assured them that the facility would be properly maintained.

Foundations Explain Motivation

Mr Seth Darlington Nyasorgbor, who led the Ras Muta Foundation, said the intervention was aimed at providing a practical facility that would serve the school and the wider community.

Mr N.K.K. Gidiglo, speaking on behalf of the Ras Muta Foundation and the Nyasorgbor family, said the project was also part of efforts to honour the memory of the late Edem Divine Nyasorgbor, popularly known as Ras Muta.

He said the family considered supporting projects that directly improved the wellbeing of children and community members a meaningful way to preserve his legacy.

Mr Israel Selikem Bossman, Assembly Member for the Denu Electoral Area and leader of the Denu Nugoryiyi Foundation, thanked the Ras Muta Foundation for its contribution to the project.

He assured the school community of his continued support to ensure that the facility was properly maintained and remained useful to the school.

The school presented citations to the two foundations in recognition of their contribution.

Pupils and staff also expressed appreciation, saying the facility would improve sanitation, enhance their safety and eliminate the need to leave the school premises to access toilet facilities.
