Residents Demand Completion of Abandoned Hodzo–Aviefe Bridge

Residents, farmers and commuters along the Hodzo–Aviefe road in the Ho Central Municipality of the Volta Region have appealed to the government to urgently intervene to facilitate the completion of a stalled bridge project.
The bridge, which was initiated by a contractor, has reportedly remained unattended for some time, leaving residents and road users to struggle with difficult road conditions between Hodzo, Aviefe and nearby communities.
Residents say the poor state of the route is particularly affecting farmers, with some vehicles unable to reach farms to transport harvested produce.
They said some farm produce bought by traders had been left in the bush because vehicles could not access the farms, raising concerns about increasing post-harvest losses and their impact on farmers’ incomes.
A farmer who spoke during a visit to the area appealed to the authorities to treat the project as a matter of urgency, saying the poor road conditions had created significant difficulties for residents and farmers.
The residents are calling for the contractor to return to the site and complete the bridge, which they believe would improve access, facilitate the movement of agricultural produce and boost economic activity in the affected communities.
The Ho Municipal Assembly had earlier reported that heavy rainfall had affected the bridge project.
In a June 2026 update, the Assembly said excessive rainwater had flooded the construction area and indicated that assessments and remedial works would be undertaken. It also advised residents and motorists to exercise caution when using the route.
Residents are therefore urging the authorities to expedite the remedial works and ensure the bridge is completed.
For the farming communities, they say, completing the bridge is critical to improving transportation, reducing post-harvest losses and strengthening economic activity in the area.
