Residents Demand Urgent Fix for Abor–Tsiame–Atiavi Road

Residents of Abor in the Volta Region are appealing to the government to urgently rehabilitate the Abor–Tsiame–Atiavi road, citing frequent accidents, rising transport fares and disruptions to local businesses.

Resident John Kudjo told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that deep potholes and eroded sections of the road make driving particularly dangerous for motorbike and commercial vehicle operators, especially during the rainy season.

He said some drivers were also taking advantage of the poor road conditions to increase fares for okada and lorry services, placing an additional financial burden on commuters.

“Sometimes it makes it nearly impassable, which forces some drivers to either abandon the route altogether or charge exorbitant fares to compensate for the risk and delay involved,” Mr Kudjo said.

He recalled previous government promises to commence construction of the road, but said the commitment had yet to materialise.

Businesswoman Tsoenamawu Abiwu said the poor road was also affecting farmers, traders and other businesses by making it difficult to transport goods to and from nearby market centres.

She appealed to President John Dramani Mahama and the government to prioritise the project, saying a properly constructed road would improve road safety, stimulate economic activity and enhance living conditions in the area.

Residents warned that continued delays could result in more accidents and loss of lives, and urged authorities to treat the road rehabilitation as an urgent priority.
